## Summary

Match relaunched Upward for marriage-minded singles while telling investors Tinder won't stop shrinking until late 2027.

## Key takeaways

- Upward relaunched September 22 for 18 to 34 year olds with traditional values.
- Match expects Tinder monthly users to be flat and payers to return to growth by Q4 2027.
- Hinge revenue grew 22% in Q2 while group payers fell 6%.
- Match does not disclose Upward's revenue or users.

Match Group relaunched Upward on September 22 as "the home of modern courtship." The app, founded in 2020 as a Christian dating service, now targets 18 to 34 year olds with traditional values around faith, family and community. New features include an optional "Chivalry Mode" where men make the first move, a visible marriage timeline and shared core values on each profile. Match puts the addressable group at roughly one in four U.S. singles in that age band.

On its own, that is a brand refresh. Set against what Match has told investors, it is strategy.

## What Match is telling us

On its August earnings call, Match's CFO said the company expects Tinder's monthly users to be "flat by the end of Q4 of next year" and Tinder's payers to "return to growth by Q4 of next year." CEO Spencer Rascoff said Tinder's daily users should turn positive year over year "any day now." Read plainly, Match expects its largest brand to keep losing monthly users and payers for roughly five more quarters. The Q2 numbers show why: group payers fell 6% to 13.3 million, and total revenue fell 1% to $853 million, held up only because revenue per payer rose 6%. Guidance for Q3 is revenue down 2% to 3%.

The exception is Hinge. Its revenue grew 22% in Q2 with monthly users up 13%, and its European expansion markets grew revenue 86%. Hinge's pitch has always been intent, and it is the only large brand in the portfolio growing on both users and revenue.

## Why Upward matters more than its size

Upward is an attempt to repeat the Hinge lesson in a narrower, values-defined segment. "Chivalry Mode" is also a notable reversal of the category's last big product idea, women messaging first, which Bumble itself has been relaxing. And Upward doesn't launch alone: Rascoff told Fast Company this month that Match now runs marketing for more than 20 brands from a single team overseeing about $600 million a year in digital advertising, on a shared technology stack.

## What Match isn't saying

Upward sits inside the group of smaller brands Match calls Everyone Everywhere, which it doesn't break out individually, and the relaunch release gives no user or subscriber figures. If Upward starts appearing by name on earnings calls, that is the signal it is working.

Why it matters: The company that built the swipe economy is repositioning around intent: Hinge at scale, Upward by values, and Overtone, whose $18 million round Match joined, by AI curation. Monetizing seriousness is the incumbent's growth plan for 2026 and 2027.
