Tinder has reversed a months-long decline in user engagement with a significant overhaul of its recommendation algorithm. The dating app giant saw sustained conversations grow for the first time in 2024 during August, marking a turnaround after disappointing second quarter results. The improvements follow the July introduction of a unified system that prioritizes conversation quality over other metrics.

Tinder says the number of sustained conversations on its dating app increased 2% year over year in August, following a change to its recommendation algorithm introduced in July. CTO Vinay Kuruvila explained the specifics in Tinder's September 3rd CEO Connection series livestream, titled Inside Tinder Product Velocity.

The company defines a sustained conversation, or "Spark," as an exchange that goes back and forth at least six times. Tinder's updated recommendation system is designed to prioritize potential matches based on the likelihood that they will reach this level of interaction. This metric serves as a proxy for meaningful connections rather than superficial engagement.

The Technical Shift Behind the Algorithm

The change, referred to internally as Queue Unification v2, combined Tinder's previously separate recommendation systems into a single system. Tinder Chief Technology Officer Vinay Kuruvila said the unified system is focused on optimizing for "sparks," rather than balancing multiple objectives such as likes, retention and revenue. This represents a fundamental shift in how the platform approaches user matching.

Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff said the system now reorders recommendations with the goal of increasing the likelihood that users will not only match but continue talking. The previous approach used separate algorithms that sometimes worked at cross-purposes, potentially showing users profiles that would generate likes but not meaningful conversations. By consolidating these systems, Tinder can now optimize for a single, more meaningful outcome.

Measuring the Turnaround

The August results represent an improvement from earlier in the year. Sustained conversations were down 4% year over year in the second quarter and fell 1% in July before returning to growth in August. The trajectory shows a clear inflection point coinciding with the algorithm rollout.

Another measure, Spark coverage, also increased. The percentage of users reaching a Spark was up 2% year over year in the second quarter, followed by a 5% increase in July and a 6% increase in August. This accelerating growth pattern suggests the algorithm changes are gaining effectiveness as they reach more users and accumulate more learning data.

The percentage of users reaching a Spark was up 6% year over year in August, marking the strongest performance of the year.

Rollout Still in Progress

The recommendation overhaul has not yet been completed across Tinder's entire user base. Kuruvila said in a September 3 presentation that the unified system was still being rolled out across different user segments. This phased approach allows the company to monitor performance and make adjustments before full deployment.

The staged rollout means that the improvements seen in August may not represent the full potential of the new system. As more users are migrated to Queue Unification v2, Tinder expects to see further gains in sustained conversations and overall engagement. The company has not provided a timeline for when the rollout will be complete.

Key Takeaways

  • Optimizing for conversation quality rather than multiple competing metrics can produce better engagement outcomes, as demonstrated by Tinder's shift to prioritizing Sparks over likes and revenue
  • Algorithm changes can take several months to show positive results, with Tinder seeing declines in Q2 and July before August's turnaround
  • The phased rollout strategy suggests even stronger performance may be ahead as the unified recommendation system reaches Tinder's complete user base

Key takeaways

  • 01Tinder's algorithm overhaul increased sustained conversations by 2% year over year in August.
  • 02The new system prioritizes "Sparks" (conversations with six or more exchanges) for engagement.
  • 03Spark coverage, the percentage of users reaching a Spark, increased 6% in August.
  • 04Optimizing for conversation quality can reverse engagement declines and improve user retention.
  • 05The unified recommendation system is still rolling out to Tinder's full user base.

Questions operators ask

Tinder implemented a new Queue Unification v2 system, introduced in July, which merges previously separate recommendation engines. This unified system now focuses on optimizing for "Sparks," defined as conversations with at least six back-and-forth exchanges, rather than balancing multiple objectives like likes, retention, and revenue.
