Tinder Launches Group Hangouts, Matching Friend Groups With Each Other
Groups of friends can now pick an activity and match with other groups. Tinder says women were more than twice as likely to Like a group profile in testing.

Tinder launched Group Hangouts on September 30, a feature that lets groups of friends match with other groups around a shared activity. It is rolling out in the U.S. and select markets, with more markets to follow in phases.
One member starts a group, picks an activity and invites at least two friends. Once the group has three members, its profile appears in Tinder's main card stack. Groups browse and Like other groups, and a mutual Like opens a shared group chat. Every participant needs their own Tinder account, and members can leave a conversation, block or report others on their own. TechCrunch reported that groups can have up to 15 members.
The feature builds on Double Date, which Tinder says made women nearly three times more likely to Like a paired profile, with those matches exchanging 35% more messages. "Double Date proved something we suspected all along, young singles want their friends in the mix when they're meeting someone new," chief product officer Mark Kantor said. In Australian testing, Tinder says 40% of Group Hangouts invitations were accepted, and women were 2.2 times more likely to Like a group profile than a one-to-one profile.
Tinder needs the engagement. Match Group said Tinder's year-over-year decline in daily active users narrowed to 4% in the second quarter, its best result in 10 quarters, but it is still a decline.
Why it matters: Tinder is rebuilding around what women respond to: lower-pressure, social, offline plans. Group formats are hard for small apps to copy because they need density in a single city to work. For niche operators, the useful part is the data rather than the feature: women engaged far more with group and paired profiles than with solo ones.
