Apple Will Rate Dating Apps, and Romantic AI Companions, 18+

From November 16, developers must declare Dating and Relationships features in App Store Connect. Every app must do so by January 12, 2027.

Apple told developers on November 2 that App Store Connect will add two new content descriptors to its age rating questionnaire starting November 16, 2026. One covers Shared Location. The other covers Dating and Relationships, which Apple defines as "features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content."

Apps that include Dating and Relationships "receive a minimum age rating of 18+," Apple said. Developers must answer the new questions when they submit an app update or change their age rating questionnaire, and every app must complete the declarations by January 12, 2027. In Brazil, local rules require an A18 rating for Dating and Relationships and A16 for Shared Location. Developers who think a lower Brazilian rating applies can ask Brazil's Ministry of Justice and Public Security for an official rating.

A feature test, not a category test

Dating apps already limit sign-ups to adults in their terms. What changes is the label Apple applies and who has to wear it. The definition turns on features, not on the category a developer picks. An app built mainly around friends, events, games or social discovery that also lets people connect romantically has to decide whether it is in scope. So does any AI companion app that engages users in romantic or sexual conversation. Apple has now put those products in the same bucket as human dating.

The Shared Location descriptor matters for dating products too. Many apps show distance, live location or meetup check-ins. Apple says Shared Location may not affect the minimum rating in some regions, but it is a separate declaration that operators need to answer accurately.

The change follows Apple's tighter App Store rules on nonconsensual intimate imagery last month, and arrives as Congress and the states press dating services harder on scams and safety.

What operators should do

Check every app in the portfolio against Apple's wording, including white-label and companion products. Make sure store listings, screenshots, marketing and onboarding are consistent with an 18+ audience. Teams that ship AI features inside dating or social apps should look at whether those features engage in romantic content, since that alone brings an app into the descriptor.

Why it matters: An 18+ rating is a distribution decision as much as a label, because Apple's age ratings drive the content restrictions parents and device owners set. Operators with hybrid products, such as friend-finding apps with a dating mode or social apps adding AI characters, should decide now which side of the line they are on, because the declaration is due with the first update they ship after November 16. AI companion developers face the larger shift: Apple has defined romantic AI as dating, and the age and trust expectations of dating now come with it.
