South Korea's Matchmaking Agencies Are Up 34% Since 2016 as Marriages Rebound
Tax data show 2,176 matchmaking operators in South Korea in August, while wedding venues fell by almost a third over the same decade.

South Korea had 2,176 registered matchmaking agencies in August 2026, up from 1,619 in August 2016, an increase of 34.4%, according to National Tax Service business statistics reported by the Seoul Economic Daily on October 15. The count has risen every year since 2018, when it stood at 1,568, and reached 2,090 at the end of 2025.
Wedding venues moved the other way. The same data show 762 operators in August 2026, down 30.6% from 1,098 in 2016. The count bottomed at 714 in 2024 and has hovered around 760 this year.
Marriages are recovering. Statistics Korea data cited by the paper show 240,326 marriages in 2025, the highest since 2018 and up from a record low of 191,690 in 2022. From January to July 2026 there were 146,656 marriages, the most for that period in eight years, and July alone was up 9.3% from a year earlier. The paper attributes the rebound to people born between 1991 and 1995 reaching typical marrying age and a more favorable view of marriage among younger people.
Why it matters: In one of the world's lowest-fertility countries, paid human matchmaking kept growing through a decade when marriages fell, and is now riding a rebound. That supports a pattern seen in Japan and India too: when apps feel low-intent, a meaningful group of marriage-minded singles will pay for curated, service-led matching. Operators considering premium or matchmaking tiers in Asia have a data point that the business is expanding, not just surviving.
